Application of Water Jet Cutting Technology in the Aviation Industry

2025-11-06
As we all know, the booming aviation market continues to drive the development of ultra-high pressure water jet cutting technology. Compared with the Boeing 767, the material composition of the Boeing 787 is completely different.

The material ratio of the Boeing 787 is: 50% composite materials, 23% aluminum, 15% titanium, 6% steel, and 6% others. The Boeing 767 is lighter because aluminum accounts for 77% of its weight. Milling and processing of composite materials, titanium materials, aluminum materials, etc., have become the main technical application fields of ultra-high pressure water jet cutting.

This water jet cutting process can exhibit superior performance when dealing with Inconel, steel, plastics, tool materials, or laboratory test materials. Water jet cutting technology has extended to the aircraft manufacturing industry and is used in almost all components, attracting special attention.

Water jets can cut at any angle and manufacture parts around critical angles with little or no manual processing. As a cold cutting technology, water jets do not cause thermal damage to materials. Abrasive water jet technology is used for drilling and cutting aviation composite materials without surface spalling.

Water jet cutting can be easily integrated with robotic arms, significantly reducing the number of fixtures and capital investment, and enabling quick setup and job change. Cutting composite materials with water jets is faster, with longer tool life and no dust generation, which can improve production efficiency in a cleaner and safer manner.
