Water as a Blade: The Amazing Water Jet Cutting Technology

2025-11-13
A water jet cutter is a material processing technology that utilizes high-pressure water jets. Its core principle is to pressurize water to 20,000–60,000 PSI through a high-pressure pump, forming a high-speed jet (with a velocity of up to 800-1000 m/s) to achieve material cutting.

During the cutting process, the kinetic energy of the water jet is converted into impact force and shear force, enabling cold cutting of materials. This avoids thermal deformation and chemical changes, and no harmful substances are produced. Post-cutting requires little or no secondary processing. It is safe, environmentally friendly, fast and efficient, capable of cutting arbitrary curves with convenience and flexibility. With a wide range of applications, it has been widely adopted in various industries, especially the aerospace industry.

With continuous technological improvements, mixing abrasives such as garnet sand and carborundum into high-pressure water for auxiliary cutting has greatly increased the cutting speed and thickness of water jets. Meanwhile, the development of ultra-high pressure systems and intelligence (including five-axis linkage and robot control) will further enhance the efficiency and precision of water jet cutting technology.
